As the title mentioned, this is my very first post on Oppo, and I am delighted to be here. I am still trying to learn the ropes and figure out how to attach pic’s to posts etc, but I wanted to let you all know a bit about myself and where my passion for all things automotive comes from.
I live in Gilbert, Arizona but I am from Northern N.J. I moved here last April for a job in the Medical Device field, which didn’t pan out so well. Still debating if I should head back East, or try and make it work out here.
I am a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served honorably for over eight years, from 1996 to 2004. It was my time in the service that sparked my love of cars and car culture in general. At the ripe old age of 19, I was sent to Atsugi, Japan as my very first duty station. I had only owned one car previous to that, and it was a hand me down Oldsmobile. To say I wasn’t really into cars much before I moved to Japan would be a serious understatement
. That all changed when the wheels of my plane to Tokyo touched down. I remember sitting on a Japanese bus, well into the night, watching all kinds of interesting cars drive past me. I was hooked almost instantly.
After completing my required drives education classes on base, I immeditaly bought my first car, a 1989 Honda Prelude. Over the next four years I owned a 1990 Skyline GTS-T 2 door as well as a glass-top CRX. Most of my time spent in Japan when not aboard ship was spent driving and exploring the country.
When my tour of duty was completed in late 1999, I came back to New Jersey for a month of leave before I had to be in California for my next assignment. Naturally I would need a car, and being (at that time) a Skyline wasn’t the answer, I bought the next best thing in my budget, a black 1999 Acura Integra GS-R. I drove her across country to Fresno, and enjoyed the car for almost three entire months, before it was stolen and never recovered.
Since then I have owned a variety of vehicles, but never a manual transmission funny enough. My current car is a 2004.5 VW GLI with the 6 speed.
I am looking forward to becoming a positive contributor to the site and maybe even making a few friends along the way. Thanks for reading!

Paging SaveTheIntegras, I’m pretty sure this is how all Integra ownership ends. Welcome to Oppo!

Was wondering about that car, it looks familiar! What part of Northern NJ? Im in Morris County, but frequent Bergen, Essex and Sussex regularly.
If you decide to come back this way, theres plenty of Oppos out here to keep you company!

On behalf of Fresno (my hometown) I apologize.

Wait, there’s a Sussex and an Essex in New Jersey? I’m from the original Sussex, in the UK.

Yes, New Jersey was named after Jersey, many of the counties and areas have the same or similar names.

Bergen is in Norway, is also the name of the backpacks that British Soldiers (and I assume Norwegians) carry.

Where I live in Western NY, we have a Hamburg, Holland, Dunkirk, and Boston. None of which are anything like the places that share their names.

Bought the car here local in Arizona, and it’s been here all it’s life. I was born in Livingston, and then moved to Randolph when I was in 8th grade. After the Navy I moved back to Jersey. Did a quick stint in Bloomfield, then Newark (what was I thinking!) before getting married and moving to Union.

In Jersey we have a Union, Union Township and Union Beach. For the first 3 months when I lived in Union, the utility company that provided our homes water was steadfast that we did, indeed live in Union Beach. Despite Union Beach being like 300 miles away, and umm, near a beach, which we were def not near.

Haha, yeah it’s O.K. It got stolen in Fresno, but I lived in Hanford at the time. I do not miss that area.

Ah, I guess there’s just a million GLIs & Jettas around NJ. I live right outside of Randolph and used to work in Randolph for several years. If you ever make a trip out here, drop a line! There’s a ton of Oppos out here, and we all get together somewhat often.

I agree 100. It’s “just” quick enough in stock form, and the aftermarket for the 1.8t in this gen GLI is unlimited to the size of you’re wallet. Merging onto the highway here in AZ I can touch 100 if not careful. It has a smooth powerband and rides very nice at highway speed. Only complaint is the previous owner upgraded the clutch, and it’s a tad heavy for afternoon traffic for my taste. Considering selling it soon anyway, because car guys are never happy.
